I've had a bike in my life for as long as I can remember. When I lived in California as a kid I used to ride my bike all the time. I used to go on this route that I swear was 10 miles or so, and I never had to stop, I just plugged along.
When I first moved to Utah after graduating from high school I didn't have a car, so I used my bike to get around. I used it pretty frequently that first year, and then I got a car. I took my bike with me every time I moved, but hardly ever used it. Back then I had plenty to keep me busy, and I would still go dancing and running, so riding my bike didn't seem that important.
When I moved to Logan in 2006 I took my bike with me (which had been stored at an apartment complex I used to live at, I was surprised after two years it was still there!). For two years I didn't do anything with my bike other than move it from an outside location to a storage unit. By the third year in Logan I was out of shape enough that I wanted to start riding my bike again (running wasn't so much fun since I injured my back).
So after about four or five years of disuse I took it to a bike shop for a tune up. The guy who checked out my bike said I should just get a new bike. I asked if I would be able to ride it on the road after a tune up, since that's all I would do with it. He said it should be fine, and about $75-100 later I got my bike back. I never rode it to school (there is a freaking HUGE hill to ride up, and there was no way I could do that!), but I would ride it for a couple of miles around where I lived at the time.
When I moved to West Jordan, the bike was ignored again for about a year and a half. I probably should have gotten a tune up, but I didn't. Last Friday, when the weather was GORGEOUS, I decided to get back on that bike. The tires were flat, but luckily the neighbors had a pump I could use. I set out excited, and came back exhausted and content. I don't know exactly how long I rode, but it was about 10-15 minutes and 2-3 miles. I'm definitely out of shape, but it was fun listening to some tunes while feeling the wind in my face and hair and feeling the warm sun on my body. I'm hoping when the weather warms up I'll start riding more, and when I get in shape enough, maybe I'll start taking my bike when I ride the bus and cut some waiting time out of the equation.
Wish me luck!!

Awesome! I wish I still had a bike. My husband has one and threatens to sell it. The dang thing has flat tires. If only, if only...Maybe this summer will be the one that I get it fixed to ride.
