I had to do a group presentation tonight on Journal Article Indexing. The topic is still a little confusing to me, but I understand most of it. It lasted over 30 minutes (the minimum was 30), and I was shaking or having difficulty breathing normal the entire time I was talking. It is so nice to have it done and over with. I went to speak with the professor afterward to make sure of something and was told my group did very well and we got an A! I was very excited to hear that since I have been stressing about this thing all week. Since I normally just mention what I'm doing for school, I've decided to actually give a little synopsis of what my presentation was on.
Journal indexing is not as easy as it sounds. Normally this is only done with scholarly journals and newspapers, but can often be done with other forms of periodicals. To index an indexer must understand subject headings, be excellent analyzers, as well as very precise. There are many types of indexes: subject, author, title, abstract, etc.
After doing all the research, I can see why it's important, but I don't think I would ever enjoy doing it as a job. It's tedious work with a frantic deadline it seems. They are under appreciated, and they don't need a degree, just good cognitive and writing skills.
