Last night I successfully maneuvered through an encounter with a nasty patron with the Weber County Library. He had previously had a lot of fines and caused quite the fuss, or so I heard about it later. He almost made a librarian cry! For some reason he likes to talk in a loud voice, and he doesn't like it when a problem can't be fixed right away to his satisfaction. I didn't know he was THAT patron when I started helping him last night. Almost as soon as he started talking, my heart started to race and I wanted to not be in the situation any more. Luckily it only took two or three attempts to get the rules and the situation figured out. By the time he left (only to return one or two more times), I decided to reward myself with a piece of chocolate and my coworker concurred.
Luckily it was almost closing time and there were things to do, so when this not so pleasant patron decided to return several times I was able to keep myself occupied. I do feel bad though that my coworker had to deal with him the other times he came in. It was a rather slow first couple of hours (I worked four), so I attempted to continue to familiarize myself with the library and its policies. The rush began about one hour before the library closed, which was also the time I got off. So I had to rush through and get requested holds (my second time doing it), and try to check in all the books, movies, and cds that everybody turned in about 10 minutes before the library closed. I only got about half way through before my shift was over. I'm hoping the turn girls that had to stay after closing didn't have to stay too long. I only know my schedule up until next week, so I'll only have to help after closing once.
