So last week I started my training for the Weber County Library substitute position. Between that job and working at SLCC (Salt Lake Community College) I clocked about 45 hours of work. The upside to this is that I'm finally working in a public library, the pay is good, and I'm learning a lot. The downside is that I don't have much free time during the week, so it doesn't leave much time, or energy, to do school work. I had no idea how different the public library would be. I mean, I had an idea but since SLCC uses the Dewey Decimal system, I figured I would be able to adjust pretty quickly. I think I have adjusted, but I still have to get used to the differences. The training has been going well, and I know my work schedule for the next two weeks, which is kind of nice.
While there is so much to know, I like the atmosphere of the public library. I stay busy most of the time, which makes the shift fly by faster. I get to actually practice what I'm taught in class, especially in regards to reference questions. I have to say it has been hit and miss. Some of the things I know not to do, I did; other times I didn't ask enough questions so the patron was frustrated and unable to find what they were looking for. I feel like there's still a lot I don't know, and I'm still not quite sure about some of the things that are expected of me. One of the librarians where I've been training retired last week, so all of my hours over the next two weeks will be at the same library. I've gotten the hang of the circulation desk, I think, but I still don't have all the information that people ask me. Sadly enough, I had no idea what the library hours were, which is sad considering that they're pretty much the same everywhere. I got a quick introduction to the summer reading program, but I'm still not aware of all the programs the library offers.
Hopefully things will start to get easier, especially now that most of my training is done. Wish me luck on getting everything done that I need to.
