Quick Catch Up

These last few weeks of my internship have been busy, and at the same time, not busy. Last week I went to dinner with the lady in charge of USU housing and all the USU interns, saw The Dark Knight (I actually liked this one!!), walked from the Madison Building to the Washington Monument to the White House to McPherson Square for dinner with a friend, and went to Williamsburg.
I had a lot of fun at Williamsburg. I went with Richard and Rachel, where we explored a lot. I got to see the Governor's Palace (really just a rather large house, but whatever works), the capitol building, the sanitarium (is that relation to sanitation or sanity?), an episcopal church (where I listened to a harpsichord being played and also went to a service there on Sunday), the magazine, the gaol (it took me awhile to realize that that's the JAIL. Really weird spelling back then), and several other places. We went on a ghost tour, but one based on what employees have actually seen rather than myth. It was pretty cool, our guide was pretty into it. She was very enthusiastic.
I've decided that episcopal churches are interesting. If it wasn't for the fact that they say a lot of written prayers (uniform prayers?), it would be a great place to go to. There was a lot of singing (all of the songs were pretty fast paced too), and the sermon lasted about 15 minutes. It was discussing some of the parables mentioned in Matthew. They didn't say anything that I felt I disagreed with, which was also nice, I could focus on the message rather than how our faiths were different. I've been to a baptist church, and it was very different to what I was used to. Not a lot, but there were a few major doctrines that I couldn't get over, so it was hard to focus on the message.
After church we went to Jamestown, the REAL one, and looked around. We probably only spent an hour or so there, which all of us were okay with. It was some pretty scenary, and some of the artifacts were cool, but it was the end of a long, hot weekend, and all of us were ready to go home.
The food we had while down there was pretty good. We had breakfast at the Silver Diner, where I met Rishad (spelling may be a little off), one of Richard's friends. He is an amazing, hilarious person. If only he were single. *sigh* Oh well, it was a great three hour breakfast. I'm serious, we probably ate in a half hour, but we sat there and talked about a lot of things. It was nice to let Richard catch up with one of his friends too. It's interesting to see him interact with one of his childhood friends. Dinner on Friday we went to the Lebanese Cafe to try out food I was told I MUST have. I didn't particularly care for the pies, but the Maan'ek was FABULOUS. Just thinking about it makes me want to have another one. It's hard to describe what it is, it's like a sandwich, but with a floury, fluffy tortilla (kind of like the tortillas used in gorditas, but SO MUCH BETTER). Saturday night we went to The Seasons, where the food was good (Rachel and I ended up switching entrees, but both were still good), and the service was FANTASTIC (I realize I'm talking a lot in caps, sorry, but it's great for emphasis). She was friendly, engaging, and she was very fast in getting our food to us and keeping our drinks filled. I've also had BBQ from Pierce's BBQ, which was really good. It was surprising considering it was essentially fast food.
This week has been decently busy too. Yesterday I went to Culpeper, where the Audio Visual center is (they have basically every form of audio and visual type, edisons spool thing, records (aluminum and others), and so on). We spent all day there, which was more time than I wanted to be there. But I got to see the first film reel for the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and the first sound/video recording (which is only 90 seconds long). I got to see the reel, but I didn't get to see the film itself, which is okay with me. We got several group photos (gag me with a spoon. I'm getting really sick of the many pictures we've had to take). But I did get off work about an hour early, so a bunch of us went to Chinatown (which isn't very big) and had dinner and ice cream. Today is a new burger place that always has a line, and later this week I'll be going to the International Spy Museum. I haven't figured out what I'm doing for the weekend. But I'm really starting to dread the call back to reality. I'm only in DC for less than two weeks. Oh well, back to "work". I got to hang fliers for our exhibition in both the Jefferson and Adams buildings to let staff know that a lot of cool stuff will be shown. My exhibit isn't too bad, if I say so myself.
*Yes, I realize this wasn't really quick, but there was a lot to say.

You met Rashad!!!!!!!!! Gotta love that man... Miss him a lot.

The "gaol" spelling is one of the oldest jokes in Williamsburg: all these tourist walking around looking for the "gay-ole" who get really irritated when they see it's just a "jail."

I told you the Maan'ak was amazing. I'll forgive you for disliking the cheese pies, though. BUt only because I know that you'll drive around this cow town for the next year sighing and saying "Man... I would kill for a maan'ak right now..."
