Since my last post wasn't so happy, I'm going to post a book review. I read The Reader, which was made into a movie. I saw the preview, and while seeing the movie didn't exactly sound fun (I'm not a big fan of seeing people go at it, especially when the guy is supposed to be 15 and the woman is supposed to be 32), the plot sounded interesting, so I read the book. The setting is I'm guessing Western Germany in the 1950s or 1960s. The book is split into three sections, one as a teenager, one in college, and the last as a man in his 40s or 50s.
The book is about the relationship between a boy and a women he met. As a teenager he's enamoured with her, and it seems like she has no one in her life, so she feeds his fire as it were. The affair lasts less than a year before she disappears. While he is in law school he goes to a war time trial, and he sees his former lover among the defendants, and he reflects on his relationship with her, and makes new discoveries. The last section is probably the saddest (not that it's a happy book to begin with), and the two people are once again brought into each other's lives.
I won't go into anymore detail, but I really enjoyed the book. The book makes you really reflect on how you view things and relationships. The sex scenes aren't descriptive, and in a way add to how you see the relationship evolve. It's a light read once you get into it, and it gives an interesting view of times after WWII, and the sentiments of the generation of those who came after the war.
