My job has gotten a little stressful recently. We started a new project in March, and it's beginning to be crunch time as the deadline is the end of this month. This last week the crap hit the fan, kind of. The higher-uppers decided to figure out how long people are "working" in their 8 hour shift. They do this by noting the time difference between notes being entered into the system. I had a problem with this method, especially when there were a lot of factors that weren't taken into consideration. Needless to say, the outcome wasn't good. It turns out that there are several people who only "work" about 2 hours of their shift.
So they had a meeting with everyone and essentially said we weren't working hard enough and if we didn't pick up the pace people would be let go. The way they did it was effective, I'm sure, but it wasn't done well. There were a lot of hard feelings that day. I was upset too, especially with how they said it. I understand that there is some goofing off, some people don't work as hard as others, but to lump everybody together in that wasn't acceptable.
So they've made some changes to our work day. First, the team leads went around and discussed what was going to change, and where we were at. My team lead was very cautious in his chat (which isn't surprising considering he's only been one for a couple of weeks), but also very encouraging. I'm doing well, but there's room for improvement. He discussed what my working time was on Monday (my birthday), and out of the 8 hour day, I was only considered to have worked about 5 hours of my 8 hour shift. I discussed my concerns, and he stated if they ever became an issue, he would have my back. They're pushing making at least 75 calls a day, and I average about 60 in a day. The second change they've made is that we need to log into our phones so they can see how long our calls last, how long we wait between calls, etc. It's very frustrating going to work and know that they no longer trust the work we do and feel they have to watch us like a hawk.
I'm not going to lie, I kind of almost hope I get fired. Not really of course, b/c that's never good. But it would give me more time to focus on my school work. While in school I only worked about 30 hours a week, so I had time to go to class and do homework. Now I have to do all the reading with almost no classes. I'm more of a classroom learner than a book learner. I would rather have the reading supplement the classwork than the other way around. I've started looking for jobs again, which means I spent an hour one day seeing what was out there. There's a library media specialist position, two actually, that is full time out in Eagle Mountain/Lehi. While that wouldn't allow me to go part time, it would be a way to get more library experience, and give me an idea whether or not this is a position I would be interested in. There are a lot of pros and cons, so I have to decide if it's something I would want to apply for. So send good vibes my way and hope everything works out.
