I've had a couple of interesting days at work the last couple of weeks. At the end of October I got to work two extra hours to help my supervisor with a project. It was basic research and data entry, something I'm very familiar with. I didn't mind doing the work, and my supervisor was nice enough to let me keep those hours. To add to the bonus, I got to pick a prize for "helping out", so I got a little notebook, some chocolate pieces, and a little shoulder bag/satchel. I only chose the satchel/bag, but my supervisor who I was helping out decided I should get more. I didn't need it, but I didn't say no either. Is that bad?
Today was a nice day at work as well. I got to drive a car today, so I decided to wear a skirt, which only happens when I get a car. Can you imagine standing outside at 6:00am in the morning in a skirt? No thank you. Anyway, while I was shelving books I was once again annoyed by the fact that the childrens books are too packed in and I have to do a little shelf shifting to get all of them to fit. So I decided to ask my supervisor if I could start a project and make room for the childrens books. One of the main reasons for that is because our library recently acquired a lot of books from one of the other libraries closing. It seems like we're getting all the childrens books from that location, so we definitely needed more space. My idea was approved and I immediately got to work. I asked one of my coworkers if she wanted to help, and she was glad for something to do.
To begin the project we had to decide how many shelves we had to shift everything (both children and oversized books). Once that was decided we got a crash course in shifting and taking out shelves. That took some finagling and cajoling, but once that was done we were ready to go. At one point we had another coworker helping us, but she didn't stay the entire time. We had a good flow, whether it was two or three people working together. After about 2 1/2 hours we got most of the books shifted; the girl that was helping me was done with her shift and my back was done for the day.
I don't know if it will be worked on today by the people who work the afternoon/evening shift, but if not I'll probably have another hour of work tomorrow. Either way, I was grateful to have something that took up a lot of time, distracted me quite well, and I got my work out for the day.
I just hope that the shifts will be nicer than the weather is likely to be.
