This year was more eventful than planned. We were originally planning on having 9, plus a baby, over for dinner. This is actually smaller than the last two years, which made it so less food needed to be prepared. I was so tired from NOT working the previous day (I'll explain that in a second), that I ended up going to bed around 9pm the previous night and got about 11 hours of sleep. I managed to get my homework done in the morning for one of my classes and then got to work. The house had to be cleaned of course, since we were having company. Luckily we got some of the work done the previous day, so there was slightly less to do yesterday.
Because of the "blizzard" that was going to hit the Salt Lake Valley on Tuesday, the campus decided to shut down at 2pm. Normally this isn't bad, but I'm not working on Thursday or Friday, so I was trying to make up my hours. Well, the storm didn't hit until around 5pm, which made me upset because I wanted to work until 4pm. I would have had plenty of time to get home before the storm hit. I understand why they did it, a lot of businesses shut down early to allow people time to get home, which cut down the traffic when the storm finally hit. Apparently the west side of the valley got most of the snow because everybody else was saying they didn't get much snow. Well, the campus wasn't sure if they would be closed on Wednesday, so I called the info line before I went to bed and when I got up, and both times the info line said the campus would be open. So I get up, get ready, and get on the bus. It was in the single digits so I was plenty cold, but luckily I got to wear jeans so it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Of course I made the mistake of wearing a white coat, so my transfer bus almost didn't see me. I always alternate dark top and light bottom to make sure I'm seen in the early hours of the morning, but I may have to make slight changes to that. Anyway, I get to work, and it takes me quite awhile to warm up. It's not until I've been at work for 30 minutes that I think to check my phone to find out that school has been canceled for the day. My supervisor had called around 6:20 to let me know that school was closed. I decided to double check on the website and found out that it was indeed canceled. Since I was already at work I tried to see if I could stay for a few more hours so I wouldn't be so devoid of hours on my next pay check. My supervisor was cool with it, but the dean of the library was not: if the campus is closed no one is supposed to be there.
Apparently people couldn't get through to the info line, so they ended up calling the library. So, after I got one or two tasks done, I closed everything down that I had open and left. I missed my original bus that I normally take so I decided to take a different one that would get me a little over halfway home. My parents were nice enough to pick me up on their way to drop Dad off at work.
Back to Thanksgiving. Dinner went off without a hitch, everybody enjoyed the food, and several people ate too much (including me). After most people had gone home, around 5 or 6, we found out that my sister had passed out. She hadn't been feeling well, so she decided to stay home for Thanksgiving. Her husband was up all night with a fussy baby, so he was trying to catch up on sleep. My sister ended up having to go to the hospital, where after being checked out she was transferred to ICU at a different hospital. They thought she was septic, which doesn't sound good to me, and they couldn't keep her blood pressure up. Needless to say the Husband was stressed out and staying at the hospital. So we got Baby Niece for the night. When she first got here she was asleep, my dad was at the hospital with my sister, and my mom had left to get some stuff for Baby Niece. I was left home alone with her, and I got my first dose of one on one time with my niece. For the most part she was fine, but about five minutes before my mom got home, she decided she was hungry. We didn't have all the necessary stuff (which is why Mom was gone), so I tried to keep her distracted until she got back. Of course this didn't really work and by the time Mom got home I had a wriggling, screaming, crying baby in my arms. Once she had a bottle in her mouth she did much better, but it was frustrating to have a baby who needed something and I had no way to give it to her.
As of right now my sister seems to be doing better, but she's still in the ICU. She's been making calls and is a lot more coherent. She wants to go home, but she hopes to be out after another 24 hour observation. Meanwhile, my parents have gotten to relearn the joy of having a baby, and I've gotten my first dose of a baby in the house. Luckily everybody seems to be doing okay. We may get her for one more night because Husband has to work and Sister may be in the hospital for one more evening. Keep my family in your prayers.
